Master-planned community with waterfront shopping and dining
Hawaii Kai is a master-planned suburban community located 12 miles east of Downtown Honolulu on picturesque Maunalua Bay. Hawaii Kai’s development was spearheaded by influential industrialist Henry J. Kaiser in the 1960s. Kaiser envisioned an idyllic suburban community anchored by a large marina created through dredging a fishpond and wetlands.
Townhouses, single-family homes, and condominiums ring Koko Marina, with many offering docks and boat slips for direct access to its waters. The most desirable of Hawaii Kai’s properties include some of the grandest estates on Oahu. Hawaii Kai combines attractive waterfront homes with great choices for shopping and dining, plus access to mountain hiking trails and magnificent beaches.
· Diverse housing choices
· Marina and beaches
· Waterfront shopping and dining
· Koko Crater trails and botanical garden
Hawaii Kai’s eclectic housing options attract a diverse population of young families, empty-nesters, and affluent business people. The surrounding area has a large amount to offer, with waterfront restaurants, endless outdoor recreation opportunities, and some of Oahu’s most beautiful beaches.
Hawaii Kai is home to two commercial complexes, Hawaii Kai Towne Center and Koko Marina Center. Dining choices at Hawaii Kai Towne Center include Roy’s, the first of more than 30 restaurants launched by star chef Roy Yamaguchi. The original Roy’s serves Yamaguchi’s signature Hawaiian fusion cuisine with many mouthwatering dishes to choose from. If you find choosing between these fantastic menu items overwhelming, opt for the prix fixe sunset menu for a selection of Roy’s most popular courses. Maile’s Thai Bistro serves authentic (not to mention delicious!) Thai food at a reasonable price. Hawaii Kai Towne Center also has a Costco, a twice-weekly farmers’ market, and a waterfront stage with frequent events.
Koko Marina Center features more than 60 stores and restaurants. Paina Café is one of the best spots on Oahu for classic Hawaiian poke bowls. Assaggio’s Ristorante Italiano is a romantic date night favorite with award-winning Italian cuisine overlooking the marina. Kona Brewing Co. offers liquid aloha with 48 premium craft beers on draft and tasty pub grub. Koko Marina Center also has a 24 Hour Fitness, a movie theater, and a variety of fashion stores, specialty shops, and services. Koko Marina Center is geared toward a nautical island lifestyle with boat docks right next to the stores and restaurants.
Sandy Beach Park’s beautiful beachfront is known for its powerful shore breaks and barreling waves, making it one of the best spots in Hawaii for bodyboarding and bodysurfing. Consistent trade winds also make this a great place for kite flying. Koko Head provides Sandy Beach with a spectacular backdrop. The large tuff cone of Koko Crater dominates the local skyline, and the 1,000 steps of the Koko Head Stairs lead directly to the crater and provide breathtaking views.
Inside the crater, Koko Crater Botanical Garden covers 60 acres with collections of plants and trees from Africa, the Americas, Hawaii, and other areas of the Pacific. Koko Marina is your starting point for water-based activities. Along with offering excellent waterfront shopping and dining, several businesses at Koko Marina Center rent kayaks, surfboards, snorkeling gear, and everything else you need to make the most of the Oahu’s sublime ocean setting. In addition, the Hawaii Kai Golf Course is the only golfing facility on Oahu’s picturesque eastern coastline.
